When we bless someone we are bestowing God's favor upon them. While telling someone about Jesus is important, I believe that it is more effective to show them Jesus through the art of blessing people.
How do you bless someone? The picture on the left was taken from Dave Ferguson. I think it helps us to know how to bless someone. You must first start with prayer; seek God's guidance and ask God to provide you the opportunities and resources you need to bless someone. Once you know who you are going to bless you need to take time to listen. You need to know how you can best bless that person.
A great way to have the opportunity to learn about a person is to eat with them. That might be having coffee, or lunch. If you can find a way to spend some time with the person just hanging out talking. Talk enough to keep the conversation going, but let them tell their story.
Once you know how to best bless a person, start working on it. If you need the assistance of others, then get it. Begin praying again for the resources you will need to bless that person. The blessing might be big, or it might actually be something rather small. The point is that the blessing should impact their life so that they begin to see that someone cares about them so that they can recognize that God cares about them.
After you have blessed the person, look for the opportunity to share your story. It is one thing to tell a person that they have sinned and fallen short. (What a blessing that is.) But it is often more impactful if you can share how Jesus has changed or transformed your life. People who have no story tend to talk about Jesus in a matter of fact rule bound kind of way. They describe a process that must be followed to have eternal life. The fact is they aren't sure why they follow Jesus and they may not have seen Jesus at work in their lives. A person with a story knows the difference between life with Jesus and without. Even if they have followed Jesus all their life, they have been the recipient of a transformed life; a life that moved from selfishness to selfless.
Many times people no longer believe that God blesses. They have never been blessed or they don't remember it. It is difficult for God to bless us when we fail to cooperate or go and do what God needs us to do so that we can be blessed. Obedience is key.
Want to see Jesus at work? Go bless someone.
